The goal of this course is to help non-native speakers of English improve their intelligibility when speaking English. The lessons focus on sounds, features of connected speech, rhythm, and intonation in American English. Students learn how to pronounce each sound, and produce features of connected speech in American English. Throughout the course, students receive corrective feedback and learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for American English. As a result of learning, recognizing, and practicing sounds and features of connected speech in English, students improve their intelligibility and reduce their native language accent when speaking English. This course is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency. New students must take the online placement test before starting classes. This class meets for 2 hours per week for 6 weeks. The curriculum is covered in three consecutive courses. Students may re-enroll every 6 weeks.
