Haitian Creole Course Descriptions:

Haitian Creole 1
(3 hours per week for 6 weeks)

This is a beginner-level Haitian Creole language course designed for students who have little or no prior Haitian Creole learning experience. Students are introduced to the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as to Haitian culture. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to carry on basic conversations in the target language as well as read and write short passages using the structures learned. The teacher will cover the topics in Chapters 1 to 4 of the textbook and provide additional resources. Students who successfully complete Haitian Creole 1 should be able to:

  • Pronounce the letters of the Haitian alphabet
  • Use personal pronouns and possessive adjectives
  • Greet people and take leave
  • Introduce yourself and others
  • Count 1 to 1000
  • State the date
  • Tell time
  • State your age
  • Use definite and indefinite articles
  • Form simple sentences
  • Express possession
  • Ask yes or no questions using "èske"
  • Use demonstrative adjectives
  • Ask how people are and where they are from

Haitian Creole 2
(3 hours per week for 6 weeks)

The level 2 Haitian Creole course is designed for students who have completed level 1 language proficiency. Students will continue to develop their four basic skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in Haitian Creole and learn about Haitian culture. Students will carry on basic conversations as well as read and write short passages using the structures learned. The topics in chapters 5 to 7 of the textbook will be covered. Students who successfully complete Haitian Creole 2 should be able to:

  • Talk about what you do (simple present)
  • Talk about what you are doing (present progressive)
  • Talk about the past (past and past progressive)
  • Use irregular verbs 'fè' and 'fèt'
  • Express negative sentences
  • Use expressions with numbers
  • Arrange transportation 
  • Express future plans 
  • Express when you would or should do something. 
  • Tell someone to do something (imperatives)
  • Use 'ye' and 'se' as emphasis
  • Ask information questions and yes/no questions

Haitian Creole 3
(3 hours per week for 6 weeks)

The level 3 Haitian Creole course is designed for students who have completed level 2 language proficiency. Students will continue to develop their four basic skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in Haitian Creole and learn about Haitian culture. Students will carry on conversations as well as read and write short passages using the structures learned. The topics in chapters 8 to 10 of the textbook will be covered. Students who successfully complete Haitian Creole 3 should be able to:

  • Talk about illnesses
  • Use 'Kilè' in questions and answers
  • Use 'lè' to talk about events and times
  • Talk about the weather 
  • Use adverbs and adjectives including 'Anpil' as an adverb and adjective
  • Compare and contrast two things
  • Use contractions & combinations to indicate pronouns & different tenses
  • Use common helping verbs
  • Talk about possessions 
  • Read about & discuss the Haitian system of education & cultural issues
